The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) continues to be at the forefront of combating corruption in Zambia, collaborating with other investigative bodies to conduct inquiries and investigations into allegations of corruption and related crimes.
In light of recent developments, Governance Analyst Wesley Miyanda has highlighted President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive emphasising thorough investigations before any arrests are made in criminal matters. Mr. Miyanda stresses the importance of the ACC gathering solid evidence to ensure successful convictions in court.
Citing the acquittal of former Justice Minister Given Lubinda and others in similar cases, Mr. Miyanda underscores the need for meticulous investigations to prevent unnecessary expenses and time wastage. He warns that failure to do so may undermine the credibility of the justice system.
However, Mr. Miyanda also raises concerns about perceived discrepancies and partiality within the judicial system. He expresses dismay over instances where individuals with overwhelming evidence against them are acquitted, while others face severe penalties for comparatively minor offences.
He stresses the critical importance of maintaining the integrity of judges, asserting that any doubts about their integrity can compromise the delivery of justice. He also calls for greater accountability and transparency within the judicial system to ensure fair and impartial outcomes for all.
