The Zambia Wake-Up Party (ZAWAPA) has welcomed the Council of Elders’ call for unity among opposition political parties, acknowledging that unity is critical to Zambia’s national progress.
However, the party has raised concerns over the lack of clarity regarding the composition of the Council of Elders and the objectives of the proposed conference aimed at fostering opposition unity.
ZAWAPA Secretary General Benson Katongo said Zambia has previously experienced numerous political dialogues that have failed to deliver tangible outcomes, prompting the party to question whether the current initiative would be any different.
The party further expressed unease that the conference, reportedly organised by the Centre for Policy and Dialogue, appears to be leaning towards endorsing a unified government without adequately accommodating diverse political viewpoints.
ZAWAPA warned that the process seems predetermined and risks sidelining the distinct policies, manifestos, and ideologies of different political parties.
While affirming its willingness to participate, the party urged the Council of Elders to provide a clear roadmap for the engagement to ensure the conference serves as a genuine platform for inclusive dialogue rather than a rubber-stamp exercise.
Mr. Katongo emphasised that transparency and inclusivity are essential if the initiative is to contribute meaningfully to national unity.
