Energy expert Chris Mapulanga says ZESCO Limited is investing in battery energy storage systems and Independent Power Storage Systems to improve electricity reliability, particularly during peak demand hours.

Speaking to Flava News, Mr. Mapulanga said the systems will enable the utility to store excess electricity generated during the day and release it between 18:00 and 22:00 hours, when demand is highest.

He explained that improved storage capacity will support Zambia’s push toward a 24-hour economy by enhancing night-time economic activity, improving street lighting, and strengthening security operations.

Mr. Mapulanga added that solar-powered battery backup systems will ensure continuous operation of critical infrastructure such as CCTV cameras and traffic lights.

He further noted that smart city development is key to the future, with Lusaka already leading efforts to implement smart technologies aimed at improving urban efficiency, safety, and service delivery.
