The Airtel Africa Foundation has commissioned and handed over five newly constructed and refurbished schools across Zambia, reaffirming its commitment to expanding quality education and digital inclusion.

The handover ceremony was held yesterday at one of the schools in Chipata, Eastern Province. The K12 million project, implemented through Airtel Zambia in partnership with Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS), forms part of the Foundation’s flagship Adopt-A-School Programme.

The five schools are located in Chipata, Solwezi, Mongu, Mufulira and Mansa, targeting underserved rural and peri-urban communities.

Speaking at the event, Airtel Zambia Managing Director Hussam Baday said the investment reflects the Foundation’s belief that education drives socio-economic transformation.

“Our decision to invest in rural school infrastructure is deliberate. Every child, regardless of where they live, deserves access to safe, dignified, and well-equipped learning environments,” Mr. Baday said. “By investing in infrastructure, digital tools, and community partnerships, we are building opportunities for Zambia’s future generations.”

Beyond construction, the Foundation also supplied desks, computers, and digital screens to support interactive and digital learning.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Education Services Dr. Kelvin Mambwe commended Airtel Zambia for complementing government efforts to improve access to quality education in rural areas.

“Government places high value on partnerships with responsible private sector organisations such as Airtel Zambia,” Dr. Mambwe said. “While we continue to invest in teacher recruitment and policy reforms, interventions in infrastructure and digital connectivity are essential to accelerating impact.”

He noted Government’s target to connect 2,500 schools to the internet by December 2026, adding that private sector collaboration will be key to achieving the goal.

Both Airtel Zambia and the Ministry of Education thanked traditional leaders and local communities for their cooperation throughout the project, stressing that community ownership will be critical to sustaining the initiative.

The project contributes to the Airtel Africa Foundation’s wider goal of positively impacting 10 million lives across Africa by 2030. The newly handed-over schools are part of a broader national school infrastructure initiative being rolled out across multiple provinces to improve learning outcomes and build more resilient communities.

As Zambia commemorates Kenneth Kaunda Day, citizens have been urged to embrace unity and uphold the values of the country’s founding father, Kenneth Kaunda.

Political analyst John Sichangwa has called on Zambians to continue promoting the “One Zambia, One Nation” motto and reject divisions based on tribe or political affiliation.

Speaking to Flava News, Mr. Sichangwa said Dr. Kaunda’s legacy offers critical lessons on patriotism, unity, sacrifice, and prioritising national interests over personal gain.

He urged current leaders to emulate Dr. Kaunda by working together to drive national development and improve productivity. He also highlighted the former president’s strong focus on education, noting that his vision was to see educated Zambians take charge of the country’s affairs.

Meanwhile, the North-Western Province Administration has called on citizens to uphold peace, unity, and patriotism as Zambia prepares for this year’s general elections.

Speaking during Kenneth Kaunda Day commemorations at the United Church of Zambia Trinity Congregation in Solwezi, Provincial Permanent Secretary Grandson Wishikoti Katambi said the day provides an opportunity to honour Dr. Kaunda’s legacy as a patriot and peacemaker.

Colonel Katambi noted that this year’s celebrations are being held under the theme “Celebrating KK: The Patriot and Peacemaker” and emphasised the importance of praying for peaceful elections before, during, and after voting.

He highlighted the role of the church in national development, citing contributions in health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and social welfare.

Copperbelt Provincial Education Officer Dr. Nathan Kasune has praised the Copperbelt Development Foundation Limited (CDFL), describing the organization as an all-weather and dependable partner in the education sector.

Dr. Kasune expressed gratitude after CDFL handed over a girls’ dormitory project valued at K2.25 million at Lisomona Secondary School in Masaiti District.

The project includes a modern girls’ dormitory complete with an ablution block, a 50-metre borehole, a six-metre concrete stand, a 10,000-litre PVC water tank fitted with an electric pump, as well as 25 steel bunk beds and 50 mattresses.

He noted that despite Government’s significant investment in the education sector, partnerships remain critical in addressing the growing demand for infrastructure.

Dr. Kasune said school enrolment continues to rise due to population growth and the introduction of free education, placing increased pressure on existing facilities.

He added that support from partners such as CDFL plays a vital role in helping the Ministry of Education meet its infrastructure needs.

Dr. Kasune also encouraged parents and the girl child to take full advantage of the new facility to enhance learning outcomes.

He further appealed to other cooperating partners to consider supporting the construction of similar infrastructure for boys in order to promote balance and equal opportunities for all learners.

Speaking to Flava News, Mr. Swaba said leaders must recognise that citizens entrust them with power and should therefore put public needs ahead of individual gain.

He emphasised the importance of understanding the true purpose of entering politics, noting that a lack of clear direction has contributed to rising political defections.

Mr. Swaba also urged the ruling party to ensure equitable distribution of resources, stating that inclusive development can only be achieved when the interests of all citizens are considered.

He further cautioned against frequent party switching without clear justification, warning that it risks confusing the electorate and undermining political credibility.

Mr. Swaba has since encouraged aspiring leaders to uphold integrity, remain accountable, and focus on delivering meaningful development.

A coalition of civil society organisations in Zambia has called on the government to halt the signing of a proposed health aid agreement with the United States pending wider public consultation and parliamentary oversight.

The coalition said the Memorandum of Understanding between the Zambian government and the United States should not proceed without full disclosure of its contents.

According to the organisations, while the United States has played a critical role in supporting Zambia’s health sector—including providing antiretroviral treatment to about 1.3 million people—such assistance must not be tied to negotiations involving access to Zambia’s critical minerals or national health data.

Their concerns follow reports indicating that the proposed agreement could involve approximately US$1 billion in health sector support over five years, covering HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, vaccines, maternal and child health, and pandemic surveillance.

The coalition further raised concerns about transparency, potential long-term access to health data and biological samples, and financing commitments that could affect Zambia’s fiscal stability.

They have since urged the government to release the full draft agreement, ensure that health support remains unconditional, and safeguard citizens’ data in line with national data protection laws.

Kanona Power Company Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating renewable energy into its operations as part of efforts to strengthen power supply and improve service delivery.

Company Accounts Manager Bodrick Mwansa said the company is positioning itself to participate actively across the energy value chain while ensuring reliable electricity supply.

Mr. Mwansa explained that the transition to renewable energy aligns with Zambia’s broader strategy of diversifying energy sources.

He noted that heavy reliance on hydroelectric power, which is vulnerable to climate variability, has made it necessary to incorporate alternative energy solutions to ensure consistent and sustainable power supply.

He added that the company remains committed to strengthening partnerships within the energy sector to support long-term growth and efficiency.

African mining unions have resolved to strengthen continental solidarity to protect workers’ rights and ensure Africa derives greater benefits from its mineral wealth.

Speaking at the 3rd Executive Council Meeting of the Federation of African Miners and Mineral Wealth in Accra, Ghana, Federation President Joseph Chewe said unions must act collectively to respond to growing global competition for Africa’s critical minerals.

Mr. Chewe, who also serves as President of the Mineworkers Union of Zambia, warned that outsourcing, flexible labour systems, and external control of production are undermining job security and weakening collective bargaining across the mining sector.

He emphasised the need for Africa to move beyond raw mineral exports toward value addition, manufacturing, and job creation within the continent.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment Abdul-Rashid Hassan Peupuo called for stronger regional cooperation through the African Continental Free Trade Area to help African countries retain control over strategic mineral resources.

Annual inflation for March 2026 has declined to 7.1 percent, down from 7.5 percent recorded in February, signalling continued easing of price pressures.

Economist and policy analyst John Ng’andu described the reduction as a positive milestone that could help ease the cost of goods and services for consumers.

Speaking to Flava News, Mr. Ng’andu said sustaining the downward trend will depend on consistent fiscal and monetary policy management, including maintaining an effective Monetary Policy Rate.

He added that with disciplined policy implementation, inflation could further decline toward the 6 percent target set by the Bank of Zambia.

Mr. Ng’andu noted that while the development reflects progress in stabilising the economy, more effort is needed to bring inflation down further and improve household affordability.

He explained that improved storage capacity will support Zambia’s push toward a 24-hour economy by enhancing night-time economic activity, improving street lighting, and strengthening security operations.

Mr. Mapulanga added that solar-powered battery backup systems will ensure continuous operation of critical infrastructure such as CCTV cameras and traffic lights.

He further noted that smart city development is key to the future, with Lusaka already leading efforts to implement smart technologies aimed at improving urban efficiency, safety, and service delivery.
