Meanwhile, social and political anthropologist Dr. James Musonda has questioned the timing of recent government pronouncements on improved electricity generation, noting that the announcements come just months before the country heads to the polls.

Dr. Musonda stated that election periods often trigger accelerated policy responses, and has called on government to provide transparent and verifiable data regarding the country’s energy capacity.

He urged authorities to clearly outline new generation capacities developed in solar, wind, biogas, and other alternative energy sources, enabling citizens to independently assess progress rather than rely solely on political statements.

Dr. Musonda further referenced last year’s concerns over the mismatch between electricity production and national demand, particularly amid reduced water levels at major hydro power stations such as Kariba Dam. At the time, power deficits were largely attributed to low water levels affecting generation capacity.

However, he expressed concern over recent statements suggesting improved river levels and a more favourable electricity supply outlook, questioning what structural or policy changes have occurred to justify the shift.
