In a press briefing this morning, Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima announced a three-week delay in the reopening of schools due to the ongoing cholera outbreak. All learners, including Grade 8 and 10 students, are now expected to resume classes on Monday, 29th January 2024, instead of the previously scheduled date of Monday, 8th January 2024.

Mr. Syakalima revealed that this precautionary measure aims to implement necessary safety measures to manage the cholera outbreak. Additionally, the first term holiday has been shortened to one week, with pupils now set to close school on Friday, 26th April 2024, as opposed to the original date of 5th April. This adjustment aims to facilitate learners in catching up with missed classes and ensuring continuity in their education.

The cholera situation remains a cause for concern, with 257 new cases and 16 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours. Currently, 455 patients are receiving treatment in health facilities. Since October 2023, the cumulative number of cases in the country has reached 3,757.

The affected districts reporting cases include Lusaka, Luangwa, Chilanga, Chongwe, Kabwe, Vubwi, Chadiza, Petauke, Lumezi, Mpulungu, Mumbwa, Kapiri Mposhi, Monze, Gwembe, Mazabuka, Sinazongwe, Choma, and Ndola. Authorities continue to closely monitor and respond to the cholera outbreak to ensure the well-being of the population.
