The opposition Economic Front Party (EF) has voiced strong opposition to the potential extension of load shedding hours by ZESCO Limited, particularly while the company continues to export electricity to other countries.
EF Chairperson for Information and Media Fewdays Nsensema has called for immediate action from ZESCO to invoke the force majeure clause in contracts, halting power exports to alleviate the burdens faced by Zambians amidst the ongoing drought.
Mr. Nsensema asserts that the United Party for National Development (UPND) government must acknowledge the country’s crumbling economy, exacerbated by high fuel costs, elevated electricity tariffs, and prolonged periods of load shedding. He argues that the drought, declared a national disaster by President Hakainde Hichilema, warrants the invocation of force majeure to cease power exports.
Highlighting the critical role of electricity in sustaining manufacturing industries and businesses, Mr. Nsensema underlines the urgent need to safeguard the economy from collapse by prioritising domestic power supply. The EF urges ZESCO to prioritise the needs of Zambians by halting power exports and ensuring sufficient electricity to sustain vital sectors amidst growing challenges.
