ZESCO Northern Region Senior Manager for Security Services Frazier Mulebwente has issued a stern warning that anyone found vandalising ZESCO infrastructure will face the full force of the law, following a cable theft incident that disrupted water supply in parts of Kitwe.
On 3 February 2026, Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company reported the theft of electrical cables at the Ndeke Distribution Centre, an act of vandalism that forced the utility to suspend water supply to Ndeke Township and surrounding areas.
Nkana Water said the damage to critical electrical infrastructure made it impossible to operate the distribution centre, leaving thousands of residents without access to water.
Reacting to the incident, Mr. Mulebwente revealed that 120 people were arrested across the Copperbelt in 2025 for vandalising ZESCO infrastructure, with 65 convictions secured. He described the trend as alarming and costly, noting that vandalism not only disrupts electricity supply but also cripples essential services such as water provision.
Mr. Mulebwente emphasised that no one would be spared, warning that community members, contractors, and even ZESCO employees found involved in cable theft or vandalism will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
He further called on members of the public to help protect national assets by reporting suspicious activities, stressing that safeguarding electricity infrastructure is a shared responsibility vital to economic activity, public safety, and overall community welfare.
