Governance Expert Wesley Miyanda says the care of former presidents by government when they leave the highest office of the land is very cardinal.

Mr. Miyanda says the Constitution of Zambia clearly spells out that a former president is fully entitled to a house built by the government, state security, an office and many other benefits but it is sad to note that most of the houses of Zambia’s former presidents are still under construction.

He says that all the former Heads of State, except one, have since passed on, leaving behind families who are faced with life challenges.

Mr. Miyanda says the case of former President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa where his retirement house has been sold by the family’s creditors, has not settled well with citizens and should be an eye opener for the government.

He has since appealed to the current leadership to ensure that accommodation for all former Heads of State is given first priority in terms of construction and security to ensure their families are safe.
