The Media Network Action on Climate Change (MENACC) has commended the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment through the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for ordering Mwembeshi Resources Limited to stop mining operations in the lower Zambezi National Park.
MENACC Executive Coordinator Kennedy Phiri tells Flava News that the development is timely because it comes at a time when anxiety was building up among stakeholders regarding the commencement of operations of the mine in this ecologically sensitive area and the flaws of the company this early in their operations just confirm the fears environmental activists have against proceeding with this mining project in the national park.
Mr. Phiri says cancellation of the mining license will guarantee continued preservation of the National Park and the thousands of jobs and livelihoods that are being supported by the tourism of the area which the two Governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe are collaborating to enhance and promote through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding.
MENACC has called on the government to further review and eventually cancel the mining license granted to Mwembeshi Resources as stated for breaching several conditions outlined in the Environmental Impact Assessment Decision Letter dated 7th May, 2021.
