Government has expressed concern over the continued low levels of productivity in the country which according to the Zambia Productivity Report published by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, contracted by 21 percent between 2019 and 2020.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Brenda Tambatamba discloses that only five industries registered positive growth in labour productivity, namely; electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning; mining and quarrying; water supply, sewerage and waste management; real estate; as well as information and communication.
Ms. Tambatamba notes that going forward; there is need for all people in the country to put all efforts together to improve productivity as a people and she has called on all workers in the country to embrace a positive attitude towards work.
She adds that employers should provide an enabling environment for enhanced productivity while experts in various fields should provide solutions and suggestions on how to resolve some of the country’s labour market challenges.
The Minister was speaking when she launched the Productivity ZED360 expert talk which will be held virtually every first Tuesday of each month to raise awareness on productivity, share experts’ experiences in mainstreaming productivity in various sectors of the economy as well as contribute to the effective implementation of the National Productivity Policy. The theme of this talk is, “Excellence through Continuous Improvement”.
