The Medical Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has raised an alarm about the escalating prevalence of tobacco consumption in the country, emphasising the urgent need to address this growing menace.
MQHZ Director General Quince Mwabu underscored the significant environmental and health issues associated with tobacco consumption. He stressed the crucial role of the government, particularly the Ministry of Health and local government authorities, in implementing measures to curb the use of tobacco products.
Dr. Mwabu advocated for the allocation of tobacco tax proceeds to strengthen the healthcare system, creating a positive impact on public health.
Observing the loss of lives attributed to tobacco consumption, Dr. Mwabu urged a shift in perspective, viewing tobacco use as a public health issue affecting not only the users but also those exposed to second-hand and third-hand smoke. He emphasised that tackling tobacco-related health concerns should be a collective effort involving the entire society.
Dr. Mwabu has appealed to the Ministry of Local Government to devise effective measures at the community and societal levels to combat the menace of tobacco use. The call underscores the importance of proactive initiatives to safeguard public health and mitigate the adverse effects associated with tobacco consumption in society.
