The Socialist Party (SP) on the Copperbelt has condemned the arrest of its leader, Fred M’membe, describing it as an attack on freedom of expression.

SP Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson Brian Chirambo said Dr. M’membe was merely expressing his views regarding the burial of former President Edgar Lungu.

Dr. Chirambo alleged that Government is using state institutions to silence dissenting voices and described the arrest as retrogressive.

He appealed to party members and Zambians to resist what he termed oppressive leadership under the United Party for National Development (UPND).

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe was formally arrested and detained at Chilenje Police Station in Lusaka. He has been charged with Prohibition of Harassment and Humiliation contrary to Section 22(2)(a) and (b) of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.
