In a significant development, the Zambian Cabinet has given its endorsement for the introduction of licentiate examinations as a prerequisite for registration and employment of new teachers, a move welcomed by the National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ).

NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa expressed elation over the government’s approval, stressing the importance of expediting the operationalisation of the exams.

He highlighted concerns regarding the compromised caliber of some teachers due to the proliferation of teacher training institutions across the nation. He asserted that the introduction of licentiate examinations signifies a crucial step towards assessing the professional competence, academic proficiency, and moral integrity of prospective teachers.

According to the NAQEZ Executive Director, these examinations will play a vital role in scrutinising individuals’ ethical and moral readiness for the teaching profession, thereby addressing longstanding challenges related to teacher quality.

NAQEZ firmly believes that quality teachers are fundamental to quality education and views licentiate examinations as a benchmark for assessing subject-specific knowledge and pedagogical skills essential for effective teaching.

While acknowledging that licentiate examinations alone cannot elevate teaching standards, NAQEZ sees them as a catalyst for cultivating a culture of diligence and excellence within teacher training institutions. Dr. Chansa warned that institutions failing to prioritise quality education will face consequences.
