Educationist Bunda Katutu says rising concerns over pupil discipline in schools require a coordinated approach involving teachers, parents, and the wider community.

Speaking to Flava News, Mr. Katutu noted that disciplinary measures in schools often disrupt the learning process, as teachers are forced to pause lessons to supervise punishment.

He explained that when a teacher administers manual punishment, they must suspend teaching to monitor the process, negatively affecting both the educator and other learners in the classroom.

Mr. Katutu identified late coming as one of the major triggers of punishment in schools and urged parents to ensure that pupils report to school on time to avoid disciplinary action. He stressed that preventing misconduct is more effective than dealing with its consequences.

While emphasising that discipline is essential in shaping responsible citizens, Mr. Katutu said the burden should not rest solely on teachers, as excessive disciplinary responsibilities detract from effective teaching and disadvantage both staff and pupils.

He called for stronger collaboration between parents, schools, and communities to instil discipline in children and protect the learning environment.
