Acting Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Felix Mutati says government is aware of plans by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) to lay off part of its workers after resolving to consolidate its Mining Operations and earthworks division and other supporting services with the current activities at Kansanshi.
Responding to a question for oral answer from Kamfinsa Constituency Member of Parliament Christopher Kang’ombe on steps to prevent job losses at FQMO, Mr. Mutati said government has taken active measures to ensure that employees affected by the consolidation are well taken care of.
Mr. Mutati said some jobs may be adjusted and redefined due to potential duplication, adding that the majority of the employees will be transferred to the new entity without any job losses.
He revealed that the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Ministry of Mines are closely monitoring the situation and engaging FQM to ensure that the affected workers are treated fairly.
Mr. Mutati further said the development at FQM will be in accordance with the Laws and regulations, in an effort to support the affected workers in finding jobs within the FMQ group.
