The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) is urging insurance companies to cease what they term as unauthorised deductions from teachers’ pay slips. NAQEZ Western Province Deputy Provincial Coordinator Simui Bornface Namunji asserts that numerous teachers from all 16 districts have reported these illicit deductions imposed without their consent.

Mr. Namunji has called on the government to swiftly intervene and compel these companies to halt the imposition of unauthorised policies on teachers. He insists that affected teachers should be refunded, with a 15% interest on cumulative deductions, as compensation for the inconvenience and distress caused.

Additionally, Mr. Namunji discloses that affected teachers have attempted to have these unauthorised policies removed from their pay slips. However, he notes that canceled policies often reappear after a few months, accompanied by additional policies that result in higher deductions from the teachers’ pay. Mr. Namunji has expressed concern over members losing substantial amounts of money, reaching as high as K1, 200 each.
