In a significant development, the government has taken swift action to address the healthcare challenges faced by cancer patients in Zambia. In an interim measure, 20 cancer patients have been evacuated to India for specialised treatment, marking a crucial step as the Cancer Hospital in Zambia undergoes recapitalisation.

The patients, accompanied by two nurses and four caregivers, arrived in Hyderabad on Wednesday and were warmly received at the airport by Professor Victor Mukonka, the Health Advisor at the Zambia High Commission in India. The treatment will be provided at KIMS Hospitals.

Professor Mukonka stated that this move aims to ensure uninterrupted care for cancer patients during the ongoing recapitalization of the Cancer Hospital in Zambia. He highlighted the diligent efforts of the Zambia High Commission in India to facilitate skills transfer programs. The ultimate goal is for the recapitalised Cancer Hospital in Zambia to independently provide the comprehensive services currently sought in India.

Simultaneously, KIMS Hospitals’ cancer specialist and Head of Department, Dr. Pratap Reddy, assured the evacuated patients of high-quality service. Acknowledging the global surge in cancer cases, Dr. Reddy expressed confidence in the hospital’s ability to meet the challenge.

Treatment will commence after a thorough assessment of patients and a detailed explanation of the treatment procedures.
