The Non-governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC), has voiced deep concern over the escalating incidents of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including recent cases of spousal killings. NGOCC Chairperson Grace Sinkamba notes the urgent need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to combat this pervasive issue, which she says profoundly impacts society.
Ms. Sinkamba has called for unity among stakeholders to tackle GBV effectively, reaffirming the commitment of the women’s movement to combatting this scourge through the NGOCC network. She highlights plans to intensify community outreach and awareness campaigns to educate communities about the detrimental effects of GBV, stressing that such violence is intolerable and results in unnecessary loss of lives.
Ms. Sinkamba further stresses the importance of addressing mental health issues, which may contribute to the prevalence of GBV. She has called for increased accessibility to mental health facilities and heightened community sensitisation to facilitate better understanding and management of mental health challenges. Ms. Sinkamba advocates for individuals and couples to have access to counseling services, which she believes can help resolve conflicts and prevent violence within families.
