The Prisons Care and Counselling Association (PRISCCA) has called on the government to phase out the use of vehicles commonly known as “kasalanga” trucks for transporting prisoners.
Speaking in an interview with Flava News, PRISCCA Executive Director Dr. Godfrey Malembeka criticised the kasalanga trucks as outdated and inhumane for prisoner transport in the modern era.
Dr. Malembeka argued that it is inappropriate for a Christian nation to subject individuals to harsh conditions before they even reach correctional facilities. He emphasised the need for the government to replace kasalanga trucks with more suitable buses, suggesting that, if necessary, the windows and bus interiors can be secured with grills to ensure safety.
Dr. Malembeka stressed that updating prisoner transport methods is essential for treating individuals with dignity and aligning with contemporary standards of correctional management.
