Some Contractors at First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Trident Limited in Kalumbila District are said to be denying their workers from joining unions of their choice.
It is further reported that the contractors are also said not to be remitting statutory obligations to NAPSA, NHIMA and Worker’s Compensation Fund among others.
This came to light when Labour and Social Security Minister Brenda Tambatamba, Labour Commissioner Givens Muntengwa and other government officials toured the mine to appreciate the investment.
Labour Commissioner Givens Muntengwa said employees have a right to join and belong to a union of their choice in accordance with the law under Article 21 of the Zambian Constitution and denying employees this right contravenes Section 5 of the Industrial and Labour Relations Act.
He reveals that most of the contractors are also not registered with the Labour Commission despite having more than 25 employees while others have recruited unqualified Human Resource Officers.
And Ms. Tambatamba said government is keen on ensuring that it protects the interest of workers in the country.
Meanwhile, FQM Trident limited General Manager Junior Kyser assured the minster and her entourage that management will address the issue of contractors who are not complying with the procedures.
