Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala has disclosed that there have been few vendors that are trying to go back to the streets and trade after 18:00 hours, despite the Council extending the trading hours at City Market to 20:00 hours.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development had last month directed the Lusaka City Council and all the Local Authorities countrywide to remove the street vendors from undesignated trading places.
Reacting to this development, Ms. Chitangala tells Flava News that there over 6, 000 trading places in the district that street vendors can occupy.
She has called for mindset change among traders that still want to go back to the street, adding that the city has enough trading places with all the required social amenities available.
Ms. Chitangala points out that the removal of street vendors is a non-political move but a measure to address the public health challenges in the district, adding that the extension period of trading hours at City Market to 8:00pm is aimed at helping the traders.
