Some unscrupulous people are allegedly impersonating Zambia National Service (ZNS) officers and impounding mealie meal from suspected smugglers at the Mokambo border in Mufulira District which they later smuggle into the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
ZNS Mokambo Platoon Commander, Lieutenant Rinos Mtonga has disclosed that due to the porous nature of the border, smugglers use ungazetted routes to take the commodity to the DRC.
He reveals that these illegal traders are posing as ZNS Officers and impounding trucks of mealie meal from suspected smugglers using such routes then smuggling the commodity to Congo themselves.
He says this is painting a bad picture about ZNS officers, as people are under the impression that the people who have been entrusted with the responsibility to curb this vice are taking part in it.
